Answers:

SECTION A – OBJECTIVE TYPE (15 × 1 = 15 Marks)

1. Equation whose solution is x = –4

Check each option by substituting x = –4.

a) 3x + 2 = 10 → –12 + 2 = –10 ≠ 10
b) 5 + x = 9 → 5 + (–4) = 1
c) 2x – 3 = –11 → –8 – 3 = –11
d) x + 7 = 4 → –4 + 7 = 3 ≠ 4

Correct answer: (c) 2x – 3 = –11

2. If 7x – 4 = 3x + 20

7x – 3x = 20 + 4
4x = 24
x = 6

Answer: (c) 6

6x – 4x = 8 + 3
2x = 11
x = 5.5

Answer: (c) 5.5

10. Simplest form of ratio 0.25 : 1.5

Multiply both by 4 → 1 : 6

Answer: (a) 1 : 6

Answer: (c) 5

15. Mean of 6 numbers is 20

Sum = Mean × Number
= 20 × 6 = 120

Answer: (d) 120

SECTION B – SHORT ANSWER (2 × 5 = 10 Marks)

16. Solve

17.

SECTION C – LONG ANSWER (3 × 5 = 15 Marks)

22. Solve the equations

(a) 7(x – 3) – 4 = 3x + 12
7x – 21 – 4 = 3x + 12
7x – 25 = 3x + 12
4x = 37
x = 9.25

(b) 5(2x + 1) – 3(3x – 2) = 4
10x + 5 – 9x + 6 = 4
x + 11 = 4
x = –7
